Ta'aroa dwelt alone in his shell Rumia in the midst of chaos. "Chaos was the chaos of the heavens; chaos was the chaos of the earth; Chaos was the chaos of the ocean; Chaos was the chaos of the fresh water." Ta'aroa emerged from his shell and created the world.
I haven't painted in a few years, but I felt like depicting the Tahitian creation tradition of Ta'aroa. Through my research, I have learned that this deity is found in various forms throughout many parts of the Pacific, from the Philippines all the way to Rapa Nui (Easter Island). I am grateful for what was preserved and hope that more of these traditions may be recovered, especially in the Philippines where these stories are fragmented.
